The Riff Raff Podcast #57 - Emily Critchley

This week we had the pleasure of chatting to Emily Critchley, author of Notes on My Family. Emily will be reading from her hilarious and poignant debut at The Riff Raff on December 13th...have you got tickets yet!?

Emily was wonderfully insightful about a whole host of topics. We chatted about her process of listening to her characters (and not trying to control them) in order to let them reveal themselves to her. We also discussed the importance of learning to trust that your subconscious mind is hard at work behind the scenes figuring out what your plot holes are.

Emily's story focuses around a 13 and a half year old, so we considered how you put yourselves in the shoes of a younger protagonist, about the responsibility that comes hand-in-hand with writing something (initially) deemed YA, and the importance of leaving the reader with hope.

We also touched on writing a book in a linear fashion from start to finish. Here's me being super intense, wanting to know how on earth she did that!!
